Signs your teen may need more support

Teenagers rarely say "I need therapy." More often, parents notice something has shifted. If any of these sound familiar and have lasted more than a few weeks, it is worth talking to someone.

  • Pulling away from family and spending most of their time alone in their room
  • Constant worry, panic, or stomachaches and headaches before school
  • Sadness, irritability, or anger that seems bigger than the situation
  • Grades slipping or refusing to go to school
  • Changes in sleep, appetite, or energy
  • Harsh self-talk, low confidence, or comparing themselves to others online
  • Losing friends, being bullied, or struggling to fit in
  • Arguments at home that keep escalating
  • A hard change: divorce, a move, a deployment, or a loss
  • You just have a feeling your teen is carrying something they are not saying

What we help with

Teen therapy for the things teenagers actually face

Anxiety & panic

Worry that won't turn off, panic attacks, social anxiety, test anxiety, and avoiding school or activities.

Depression & low mood

Sadness, numbness, irritability, losing interest in things they used to enjoy, and feeling hopeless.

Stress & pressure

Academic pressure, sports, college worries, and the feeling of never being good enough.

Self-esteem & identity

Confidence, body image, comparison on social media, and figuring out who they are.

Friendships & bullying

Friend drama, loneliness, online conflict, and rebuilding a sense of belonging.

Family conflict & change

Constant arguments, divorce, blended families, and the strain of a parent being deployed.

Grief & hard experiences

Losing someone, painful events, and trauma, approached gently and at your teen's pace.

Anger & big emotions

Outbursts, shutting down, and learning healthier ways to handle strong feelings.

Privacy and parents

Your teen gets their own space. You stay in the loop.

Teens open up when they trust that therapy is theirs. At the first session, we explain clearly to both of you what stays private between your teen and their therapist, and what we always share with parents, including any concern about safety.

Parents are part of the process. We check in with you, share the goals we are working toward, and offer family sessions when it helps. If your teen is not ready to come in yet, you can start with a parent session on your own.

The whole teen, not just the behavior

At New Birth, we look at the whole picture. Sleep, nutrition, stress, screens and physical health all affect a teen's mood, focus and anxiety. When it makes sense, families can add our optional functional lab testing to check things like nutrients and gut health, alongside therapy.

Our founder, Dr. Regina Ransom, is a Navy veteran and a mother who raised six children, and we understand the extra weight military teens carry with moves and deployments.

How it works

Getting started is simple

Free parent call

A short, private call to hear what is going on and make sure we are the right fit for your teen.

First session

Your teen meets their therapist. We go over privacy, goals, and what feels most important to work on first.

Weekly therapy

Most teens meet weekly, in person or by telehealth, using approaches like CBT skills, trauma-informed care and mindfulness.

Check-ins with you

We keep parents informed on progress and goals, and adjust the plan as your teen grows.

Questions parents ask

Teen therapy FAQ

How do I find a good therapist for my teenager in San Diego?
Look for a therapist who works specifically with teens, explains how privacy works for teens and parents, and involves you in the process. At New Birth Family Counseling in Mission Valley, our teen therapists Mary Clukey, ASW, and Kimaada White, AMFT, see teens 13 to 17 in person and by telehealth across California. Start with a free parent call so we can make sure the fit is right.
How much does teen therapy cost?
Individual teen sessions are $150 and family sessions are $175. The first parent call is free. We are private pay and do not bill insurance.
My teen doesn't want to go to therapy. What should I do?
That is very common. Many teens agree to "just one session" once they know it is private and that they get a say in what they talk about. You can also start with a parent session on your own, and we will help you plan how to bring it up with your teen.
Will you tell me what my teen says in therapy?
We share the big picture with parents, like goals and progress, while keeping the details of your teen's conversations private so they feel safe being honest. We always tell parents about any safety concern. We explain all of this to both of you at the first session.
Do you offer teen therapy online?
Yes. Teens anywhere in California can meet with their therapist by secure telehealth, and many teens actually prefer it. In-person sessions are available at our Mission Valley office in San Diego.
Do you have evening and weekend appointments?
Yes. Mary sees teens Thursday through Sunday, including evenings and weekends, so therapy does not have to compete with school.
Do you take insurance or Tricare?
We are a private pay practice and do not bill insurance or Tricare. Families who want to use out-of-network benefits can ask us for a receipt to submit on their own.
What is the difference between teen therapy, the Teen Intensive, and teen groups?
Teen therapy is weekly one-on-one sessions. Teen Real Talk is an 8-week online group for teens 13 to 17. The Teen Intensive is a structured after-school program on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings for teens who need more support than a weekly session.
How long does teen therapy take?
It depends on what your teen is working on. Some teens feel noticeably better within a few months, while others benefit from longer support. We review progress with you regularly and adjust the plan together.
What if my teen is in crisis?
Weekly therapy is not an emergency service. If your teen is in immediate danger, call 911. For a mental health crisis, call or text 988, the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, any time.
