Therapy for Divorce & Family Changes

Helping Children Adjust When Their Family Changes

Divorce, separation, a move, a new stepparent, a blended family. Big changes ask a lot of a child, even when everyone is doing their best. We give children a calm, neutral place to sort through what they are feeling and find their footing again.

Your child may say they're fine while their behavior tells a different story.

Children often try to protect the parents they love by holding their feelings in. So the worry, sadness, or confusion comes out sideways instead, at bedtime, at school, or in a meltdown over something small. A neutral space of their own gives your child somewhere to put those feelings down.

The changes children navigate

Family change comes in many shapes

Any of these can be a lot for a child to carry, and we support children through all of them:

  • Divorce or separation
  • Moving between two homes
  • New custody or visitation schedules
  • A parent's new relationship
  • Remarriage and a new stepparent
  • Becoming a blended family
  • A new sibling or stepsiblings
  • Moving to a new home or school
  • Ongoing conflict between parents
  • Adjusting to two sets of rules and routines

What it can look like

How a child may show they are struggling

The "I'm fine" often does not match what you are seeing. Common signs include:

Going backward

Slipping into younger behaviors, needing more comfort than before.

Big feelings

Meltdowns, anger, or tears that seem out of proportion to the moment.

Worry

Anxiety about the future, about the parents, or about what happens next.

Self-blame

Quietly believing the divorce or change is somehow their fault.

Caught in the middle

Feeling torn between two parents they love, or like they cannot be fully at ease in either home.

Withdrawal

Going quiet, pulling back, or keeping their feelings to themselves.

School & sleep

Trouble concentrating, changes at school, or difficulty sleeping.

Acting out

New defiance or behavior challenges as the stress finds an outlet.

What therapy offers

A neutral space that belongs to your child

Your child does not have to protect anyone here, or choose a side.

Therapy gives your child a place that is entirely their own, where every feeling is allowed and nothing has to be tidied up for a parent's sake. Two of the most important things we help with are the belief that the change is their fault, which is common and almost never true, and the painful sense of being caught between two people they love. We help your child understand what is happening in a way that fits their age, and carry it with less weight.

How we help

A gentle, whole-child approach to change

Safe expression

Through play, art, and story, children can share what is hard to say out loud.

Making sense

We help children understand the change at their level and gently undo the idea that it is their fault.

The body

Transitions are stressful. We use calming and grounding tools for the sleep and the worry.

Steady routines

We help your child find stability and security across the new shape of family life.

You are part of this

Support for you, too

Helping a child through family change is hard while you are living through it yourself. We offer guidance on how to talk about the change, answer the hard questions, ease the transitions between homes, and protect your child from being caught in the middle. Where appropriate and agreed upon, we can support both parents in helping their child.

The steadier the adults, the safer the child feels.

Clear about our role

Focused on your child, not the legal process

Our role is your child's wellbeing. We are not a custody evaluator, we do not take sides, and we do not provide court or forensic evaluations. If your family needs that kind of service, we can help you understand where to look. Here, the focus stays entirely on helping your child feel steady and supported.

Common questions

Parents often ask

My child says they're fine. Should I still be concerned?

Often it is worth a look. Many children say they are fine to protect their parents, while their worry shows up in behavior, sleep, or school instead. A consultation can help you tell the difference, with no pressure.

Will the therapist take sides or talk to my ex?

No. We stay neutral and focused on your child. We do not take sides. Any contact with the other parent happens only with appropriate agreement and always in service of your child's wellbeing.

Do you do custody evaluations or court work?

No. We are not a custody evaluator and do not provide court or forensic evaluations. Our role is your child's emotional wellbeing. If your family needs an evaluation, we can help you understand where to look.

My child blames themselves for the divorce. Is that normal?

Very common, and almost never true. Children often quietly believe they caused it. Helping your child let go of that belief is one of the most important things we do.

What about two homes with different rules?

We help your child adjust to moving between homes and routines, and we can offer parents guidance on easing those transitions so your child feels secure in both places.

What ages do you work with?

We work with children ages 5 and up, along with teens and families.

Do you take insurance?

New Birth is a private-pay practice. We provide superbills you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement, though reimbursement is never guaranteed. Current rates are on our fees page.

Do you offer telehealth?

Yes. We see families in person at our Mission Valley office in San Diego and by secure telehealth anywhere in California.
