Play-Based & Creative Child Therapy
Because Children Don't Always Have the Words
Adults talk through their problems. Children play through them. Play, art, and story are how kids naturally make sense of their world, so they become the doorway we use to help a child heal.
Play is a child's first language.
Ask a young child to explain their worries and you will often get a shrug. Give them a sand tray, a set of figures, or a box of art supplies, and the story starts to come out. Children show us through play what they cannot yet tell us in words. Meeting them there, rather than asking them to sit and talk like an adult, is what makes therapy work for a child.
Why it works
How play helps a child heal
It's their language
Children express through play what they do not have the words, or the readiness, to say out loud.
It lowers the pressure
There is no "right answer" to give. Play feels safe, so a child can open up without even realizing they are.
It creates distance
Hard things can be explored through a character or a story, which feels safer than talking about themselves.
It builds mastery
In play, a child can rehearse, take charge, and practice new ways of coping and being.
How we work
The creative approaches we may use
Depending on your child's age, personality, and what they are working through, sessions may intentionally include:
These are chosen with intention, not at random, and not every approach is used with every child. For older children and teens, the creative pieces are often woven together with conversation and skill-building.
A common question, answered
Isn't that just playing?
It looks like play. It is doing real clinical work.
There is purpose behind what happens in the room. The toys, the art, and the stories are chosen and guided with clinical intention, so that a child can express feelings, process difficult experiences, and practice new skills in the language most natural to them. What looks like a child simply playing is a child working through something real, safely and at their own pace.
What it can help with
Play-based work runs through much of what we do
Creative approaches are woven into our care for many of the concerns families bring to us:
You are part of this
Sometimes the play includes you
Some of the most powerful creative work happens between parent and child. When it is a good fit, we coach you in parent-led play approaches that strengthen your connection and let you become part of your child's healing, right in your own living room.
Whether or not you are in the room, you will always be kept informed and involved in a way that fits your child's age.
The whole-child view
Play is one doorway among several
Creative approaches sit inside our broader whole-child care, which also considers the body, relationships, and environment. For some children, play is the main path. For others, it is one part of a fuller plan. You can read more on our children's therapy page.

Common questions
Parents often ask
Isn't play therapy just playing?
It looks that way, and that is part of why it works. But the play is guided with clinical intention. Through it, a child expresses feelings, processes difficult experiences, and practices new skills in the language most natural to them.
What ages is play-based therapy best for?
Younger children often lead almost entirely with play and art. As children get older, creative approaches are blended with conversation and skill-building. We tailor the mix to your child.
Will it help my older child or teen?
Yes. Creative and expressive approaches are adapted for older kids and teens, woven together with talk and coping skills rather than replacing them.
What does a session actually look like?
It varies by child, but you might see a child building a scene in a sand tray, drawing, playing out a story with figures, or working through a therapeutic game, all guided gently by the therapist.
Can I be part of it?
Often, yes. When it is a good fit, we coach parents in parent-led play approaches that strengthen connection and support your child's progress at home.
What ages do you work with?
We work with children ages 5 and up, along with teens and families.
Do you take insurance?
