Parent Coaching & Support

Sometimes Helping the Child Starts With Supporting the Parent

If you are exhausted, second-guessing yourself, or bracing for the next meltdown, you don't have to figure it out alone. Parent coaching gives you practical, personalized strategies for the child you actually have, and your child does not need to come in for you to start.

You know your child better than anyone. We help you know what to do next.

Most parenting advice is generic, and generic advice rarely works on the child in front of you at 7:45 on a school morning. Parent coaching is different. We start with your specific child and your specific home, and build strategies you can actually use, so the hardest moments start to feel less impossible.

If you have wondered

Does any of this sound familiar?

  • Why is my child acting this way?
  • What am I supposed to do during a meltdown?
  • How do I help my anxious child without making it worse?
  • How do I set boundaries without a battle every time?
  • What do I do when my child just shuts down?
  • How do I support my child after something hard?
  • How do I help my child through our divorce?
  • Am I the only one whose home feels this hard?

First, the truth

This is not about blame

Your child's struggles are not proof that you are failing.

Feeling overwhelmed does not make you a bad parent. It makes you a parent carrying something heavy without the right tools yet. We will never sit across from you looking for what you did wrong. We are here to hand you what works, so you can feel steadier and more connected to your child.

How we help

What parent coaching can give you

Understanding behavior

Learn what your child's behavior is actually communicating, so it stops feeling like defiance.

Meltdown strategies

Practical, in-the-moment tools for what to do when big feelings take over.

Boundaries without battles

Hold limits with warmth, so structure does not turn into a daily power struggle.

Communication

Ways to talk so your child feels heard, and is more able to hear you.

Connection

Rebuild closeness when conflict has worn things thin.

Calming the home

Nervous-system tools and routines that lower the temperature for everyone.

Realistic expectations

Understand what is developmentally normal, so you can meet your child where they are.

Supporting coping

Reinforce at home the skills that help anxiety, anger, and worry settle.

Worth knowing

Your child does not have to come in

Sometimes the fastest way to help a child is to support the adult who is with them every day. Parent coaching works whether your child is too young, too resistant, or simply not ready for therapy. It also works alongside your child's own therapy, and often makes that work go further. You can start today, on your own.

Who it helps

Parent coaching may be a fit if

Your child is anxious Meltdowns rule the house Boundaries feel like war Your child shuts down You are navigating divorce Something hard happened Your child won't attend therapy You just want to parent with more confidence

You do not need a crisis to reach out. Wanting to feel more confident and connected is reason enough.

The whole-child lens

We look at the whole picture with you

Because we take a whole-child view, coaching can also look at the practical things that quietly shape behavior, sleep, routines, transitions, and stress at home. When something points to a physical cause, we help you loop in your pediatrician. You can read more about that side of our care on our whole-child services page.

Common questions

Parents often ask

Does my child have to attend?

No. Parent coaching is designed for you. Your child does not have to come in, which makes it a great option when a child is very young, resistant, or not ready for their own therapy.

How is this different from a parenting class?

A class gives everyone the same information. Coaching is personalized to your child and your home, so the strategies actually fit your situation rather than a generic one.

Can I do parent coaching while my child is also in therapy?

Yes, and it often helps the child's therapy go further. When the adults at home reinforce the same skills, progress tends to stick.

What if my situation is really hard, like trauma or divorce?

Those are exactly the moments coaching helps most. We support you through the difficult stretches, and can coordinate with your child's therapy if they are also being seen.

Is this therapy for me?

Parent coaching is focused, practical support centered on your child and your parenting. It is not a diagnosis or a substitute for your own individual therapy, though we can point you toward that if it would help.

Do you take insurance?

New Birth is a private-pay practice. We provide superbills where applicable that you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement, though reimbursement is never guaranteed. Current rates are on our fees page.

Do you offer telehealth?

Yes. We meet with parents in person at our Mission Valley office in San Diego and by secure telehealth anywhere in California.

Is faith-integrated support available?

Yes, for families who want it. It is always optional and never required.
