Functional medicine & holistic health  ·  San Diego

Your body has been sending signals. It's time to listen.

Anxiety, fatigue, brain fog, and low mood often have physical drivers that standard bloodwork never looks for. We combine functional lab testing, herbal medicine, therapeutic nutrition, and mind-body care to find what's actually going on. Available on their own or alongside your therapy.

When you've been told everything looks normal.

Standard labs are built to catch disease, not dysfunction. Plenty of people land in the gap between "nothing is wrong" and "I don't feel right."

Fatigue, brain fog, and mood

When your energy, clarity, and emotional balance have been off for too long and nobody has found the answer, functional panels often surface what standard testing misses.

Hormonal health across life stages

Hormonal shifts affect mood, cognition, sleep, weight, and relationships. Cycles, postpartum, perimenopause, and beyond.

Burnout and chronic stress

Sustained stress leaves measurable marks on the body. We assess what the pressure has actually done so the recovery plan addresses it.

Five ways to work on the physical side

Each is available on its own or built into an existing therapy care plan. Every wellness consultation is the same rate regardless of focus: $350 for your initial visit and $150 for follow-ups. Lab panels are billed separately by the laboratory. Full pricing is on our fees page.

Comprehensive diagnostics
Functional lab panels
Advanced testing that looks beyond the standard reference ranges, giving a fuller picture of what may be driving your symptoms. Every panel includes a results consultation to interpret the findings and build your protocol.
Hormonal panelEstrogen, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol, DHEA, and thyroid markers to assess hormonal balance and adrenal function.
Gut health panelMicrobiome diversity, intestinal permeability, digestive enzyme function, and pathogen screening.
Inflammation markersCRP, homocysteine, oxidative stress indicators, and inflammatory markers associated with low mood and anxiety.
Nutrient panelVitamin D, B vitamins, magnesium, zinc, iron, and omega-3 status, all of which support brain and nervous system function.
Metabolic and blood sugarFasting glucose, insulin, HbA1c, and lipid markers that influence energy and mood stability through the day.
Comprehensive thyroidTSH, free T3, free T4, reverse T3, and thyroid antibodies. Thyroid dysfunction is among the most commonly missed contributors to low mood and fatigue.

Lab panels are ordered through an outside laboratory and billed separately, paid directly to the lab. You'll always see the cost before anything is ordered, and we don't run panels that won't change what we do.

Advanced genomics
IntellxxDNA genomic testing
A clinical genomic panel that looks at how your individual genetic variants influence things like methylation, detoxification, neurotransmitter function, inflammation, and nutrient processing. It doesn't diagnose anything. It helps explain why generic advice may not have worked for you.
Personalized, not predictiveGenomics informs which interventions are most likely to help you specifically. It is not a test for disease and does not predict outcomes.
Interpreted, not just deliveredRaw genetic data is close to useless without clinical interpretation. Your results are reviewed with you and translated into an actual plan.
Pairs with your labsGenomics tells us tendencies; labs tell us what's happening right now. Read together, they're far more useful than either alone.
Worth it for the stuckMost valuable for people who have tried the reasonable things and still feel unwell.
Ancestral and clinical wisdom
Herbal medicine consultations
Rooted in Dr. Ransom's lifelong practice of plant medicine, these consultations build a personalized herbal protocol to support your physical and emotional health.
Initial herbal assessmentA review of your health history, current symptoms, and goals to design an individualized protocol.
Stress and nervous systemAdaptogenic and nervine herbs selected to support your stress response and nervous system regulation.
Sleep and moodTargeted formulations to support healthy sleep and emotional resilience.
Hormonal and reproductivePlant-based support for hormonal balance, menstrual health, and perimenopause.

Herbal protocols can be provided alongside or entirely independently of therapy. Always tell your physician what you're taking, since some herbs interact with prescription medications.

Whether you start with a single panel or a full wellness plan, we understand your situation before recommending anything.

Fifteen minutes to tell us what you're experiencing and what you want to address. We'll recommend a starting point, and we'll tell you if we're not the right fit.

02

A full health assessment, and if it's warranted, we identify which panels are actually worth running for your situation. You see costs before anything is ordered.

03

Dr. Ransom reviews your results with you and builds a plan covering nutrition, herbal support, lifestyle, and anything else your findings point to.

04

Follow-up and refinement

Bodies respond unevenly. Follow-up visits track what's working, adjust what isn't, and keep the protocol current as your goals change.

Holistic health rooted in lived experience.

Dr. Regina Ransom didn't come to herbal medicine through a weekend certification. She was raised by a grandmother who grew her own herbs and understood the body's capacity to heal, and she has practiced plant-based and whole-person wellness her entire life.

That foundation sits alongside two doctorates, one in counselor education and clinical supervision and one in mind-body medicine, plus training in nursing, clinical psychology, and natural medicine.

"Everything we recommend, we understand from the inside out. This isn't functional medicine as a trend. It's ancestral wisdom meeting modern clinical science."

A doctorate in mind-body medicine The connection between physical and emotional health isn't a philosophy here. It's the subject Dr. Ransom holds a doctorate in.
Therapy and health under one roof Most functional medicine practices have no therapist. Most therapy practices never look at the body. Having both coordinated by the same clinician is the whole point.
Always lab-driven, never generic We don't hand the same protocol to every client. Nutrition and supplement recommendations come from your specific results.
Rooted in ancestral herbal practice Our herbal work draws on a lifetime of plant medicine rather than a certification course.

You don't need to be in therapy to work with us.

Every service here is available on its own. You do not need to be an existing therapy client to book a lab panel, an herbal consultation, or a wellness plan.

Book a standalone lab panel with no therapy required
Start with an herbal medicine consultation only
Get a nutrition protocol built from labs you already have
Add holistic services to your existing therapy
Begin with a wellness plan and no ongoing commitment

That said, many clients find that combining the two goes further than either alone, because the physical and emotional work reinforce each other.

Before you book

Is this a replacement for my doctor?
No. We work alongside your physician, not instead of them. We don't diagnose or treat medical conditions, and we don't advise anyone to stop a prescribed medication. If something in your results needs medical attention, we'll tell you to take it to your doctor.
Do I have to be a therapy client?
No. Every service on this page is available standalone. Many clients work with us on the physical side only, and some are seeing a therapist elsewhere.
How much does lab testing cost?
Panels are ordered through an outside laboratory and billed separately, paid directly to the lab. Pricing depends on which panels your situation calls for, and you'll see the cost before anything is ordered. Consultation rates are on our fees page.
Do you take insurance?
No. New Birth Family Counseling is private-pay. Functional lab work, herbal medicine, and nutrition protocols are almost never covered by mental health benefits anyway, which is part of why private pay is what makes this model possible. Many services and panels are HSA and FSA eligible.
Can we do this by telehealth?
Yes. Consultations are available by secure video, and lab panels are shipped to you or drawn at a local collection site. Wellness services are available beyond California, unlike our psychotherapy services, which are limited to California clients.
How long before I notice a difference?
It depends entirely on what we find and what's driving it. Some people feel a shift within weeks of correcting a significant nutrient gap. Others are working on something that took years to develop and will take months to move. We'd rather set an honest expectation than a flattering one.

Your body already knows
something is off.

A free 15-minute consultation is the right place to start. Tell us what you're experiencing and we'll recommend a first step, whether that's a lab panel, an herbal consultation, a wellness plan, or something else entirely.
