Why an intensive

Months of progress, in one focused session

Weekly therapy gives you 50 minutes at a time. Just as you open up, the hour ends and life rushes back in. An EMDR intensive gives your mind and body three uninterrupted hours to prepare, process, and settle, so the work can go deeper and hold.

Weekly EMDR

  • 50 minutes at a time
  • Preparation alone can take 4 to 6 weeks
  • Stop-and-start between sessions
  • Progress over many months

The Restore Intensive

  • Three protected hours
  • Preparation and processing in one day
  • Room to finish what you start
  • Care that continues after you leave

Is this right for you?

A good fit if you…

  • Carry a painful memory, loss, or experience that still feels close
  • Have tried weekly therapy and want deeper, faster progress
  • Have a demanding schedule, serve in the military, or are traveling in
  • Want care that includes your body, not only your thoughts

When we may suggest another path first

An intensive works best when you have some stability in daily life. If you are in active crisis, using substances heavily, or often lose time or feel disconnected from your body, Dr. Ransom may recommend building a foundation in weekly therapy first. Your free consultation is where we figure that out together.

Questions

Frequently asked

How can preparation and processing fit into three hours?

Your readiness call and Restore Workbook begin the preparation before you arrive. On the day, we complete your resourcing first, so you have a calm place and grounding tools in hand, and then move into EMDR processing. Dr. Ransom paces every step to what your nervous system can hold.

Is an EMDR intensive safe?

EMDR is a well-researched, evidence-based treatment for trauma. Intensives use the same eight-phase EMDR protocol as weekly therapy, with more time and more support built in. Screening beforehand makes sure the format is a good fit for you.

Do I have to talk about every detail of what happened?

No. EMDR does not require you to retell your story in detail. Many clients are relieved to learn they can heal without describing every moment out loud.

What is in the Restore Box and workbook?

Your 48-page Restore Workbook arrives before your intensive and stays with you. At the close of your session you receive the Restore Box: a grounding stone, calm-tool cards, a grounding bookmark, calming tea, a silk eye mask, cozy socks, a journal, and a handwritten note. Everything is chosen to help your body settle as your healing continues.

What is the restorative treatment?

A gift to help your body settle after the work, such as a massage, a facial, or a sound bath. You choose what feels right and book it within a day or two of your intensive. Nothing that involves touch is ever required.

Can I keep seeing my current therapist?

Yes. Many clients use an intensive alongside ongoing therapy. With your permission, Dr. Ransom can coordinate with your therapist.

What if I need more than one intensive?

Some experiences need more than one session. At your integration session, we will talk about whether another intensive, a full day, or weekly therapy is the best next step.

I live outside San Diego. Can I still come?

Yes. Intensives take place in person at our Mission Valley office, and clients regularly travel in. We will send guidance on nearby hotels and getting here from San Diego International Airport.

Does insurance cover an EMDR intensive?

New Birth is a private-pay practice. We provide a superbill you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement, and HSA and FSA cards are accepted.
